How to total the rows from one month with SUMIFS
March out of a year of entries, fenced in by two dates so nothing either side creeps in.
The formula
=SUMIFS(B:B,A:A,">="&DATE(2026,3,1),A:A,"<="&DATE(2026,3,31)) in column D
What each part does
B:B- The amounts being added.
">="&DATE(2026,3,1)- On or after the first of March.
"<="&DATE(2026,3,31)- On or before the last day of March. The two conditions together select only that month.
&- Joins the comparison to the date. Without it Excel reads ">=DATE" as plain text and matches nothing.
How it works, and what to watch for
Two conditions are needed, not one: on or after the first, and on or before the last. A single condition would take everything from March onwards.
The ampersand is the part people miss. ">=" is text and DATE(2026,3,1) is a date; the & joins them into one condition. Without it Excel matches nothing and quietly returns zero.
Typing the date directly, as ">=01/03/2026", works on some machines and not on others, because the day and month can swap depending on regional settings. DATE is read the same way everywhere.
Questions
Why does it return zero?
Nearly always the ampersand is missing, or the dates in column A are text rather than real dates. A date that sits on the left of its cell by default is text.
How do I make the month a cell I can change?
Put the month start in a cell and use EOMONTH of it for the end: ">="&D1 and "<="&EOMONTH(D1,0).
Can I total by month and by region at once?
Yes. SUMIFS takes more pairs: add the region range and its criterion after the two date conditions.
